Abstracts of Current Research:- The Collapse of the Supply Cooperatives of the Moshav Sector: The political and economic aspects of life in Israel?s agricultural communities, as well as on their supply cooperatives and financial organizations. Many agricultural cooperatives of the moshav type collapsed in 1985?86, threatening to bury the whole moshav sector under their debts. The research focus has recently been shifted to the kibbutzim (pl. of kibbutz), many of which are presently seeking ways to reduce communalism?which has been the main tenent of the kibbutz for over 50 years.
- Second Homes in Israel?s Countryside: This research deals with the supply of second homes in the countryside as part of the overall demand for rural tourism services. Unlike other western countries, Israel is not undergoing rural depopulation and has almost no empty country houses. Private developers are offering to invest in building them and large segments of the rural sector (kibbutzim, some moshavim) show interest in catering to the new demand. The Regional Councils, municipalities of the rural sector, favor the idea in order to expand their tax base. Second homes may constitute part of an overall package of tourism services. In addition to the tourism market, one might consider setting up groups of creative professionals (painters, architects, writers, etc.) interested in a country house, and also groups with a special interest (e.g., Theosophists, Transcendental Meditation, etc.). We recommend building neighborhoods of country houses with centrally provided upkeep and security, to prevent units left empty for part of the week from deteriorating and turning into an environmental nuisance. This feasibility study surveys locations available in five regional councils and suggests the most suitable.
- Cooperative Agriculture Settlement in Africa and Asia: A three-year project funded by the Netherlands-Israel Research Program to record the history of cooperative agricultural settlements that were founded in Nigeria, Zambia, and Nepal in the 1960s, with the assistance of Israeli agricultural specialists. The research is being carried out in Africa.
